Strengthening International Higher Education Cooperation for Sustainability

  • Room IX, UNESCO HQ 7 Place de Fontenoy-Unesco Paris, IDF, 75007 France (map)

Considering the growing global challenges that threaten societal progress and humanity’s future, it is more crucial than ever to transition from unsustainable development practices to transformative approaches. As emphasized in ‘‘Reimagining our Futures Together’: A New Social Contract for Education’ (UNESCO 2021), if education can serve as a powerful catalyst for change, we must transform education. Higher education, situated at the nexus of knowledge and practice, has a pivotal responsibility to promote international cooperation, especially in the Global South, among diverse stakeholders across education sub-sectors and broader society, addressing critical issues for sustainability.

Aligned with the celebration of International Mother Earth Day and to further promote higher education’s leadership in contributing to sustainability, please join researchers, future thinkers, and action-takers from higher education, along with UNESCO IESALC; National Geographic Learning, part of the Cengage Group; the Global Student Forum; UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks; the Network or Rectors for Sustainable Development and Transformative Alliances; the United Nations South-South University Cooperation Network; and other partners for a day of inspiring discussions on tools, practices, and strategies to strengthen international higher education cooperation for sustainability.

REGISTER HERE.

Key Objectives:

  • Engage in conversations on enhancing international higher education cooperation, particularly in the Global South, to support sustainability.

  • Share tools and best practices for fostering sustainability through transdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder collaborations.

  • Host workshops on future thinking and innovations related to sustainability in higher education.

We are also excited to announce the launch of the UNESCO IESALC-National Geographic Learning (NGL) Open Educational Resource, Introduction to Greening Higher Education, which will be showcased at this event.

We look forward to your participation in shaping the future of sustainability in higher education!
