UN at Your Doorstep: Ecosystem Restoration

The future of our planet — and our species — depends on the health of Earth’s ecosystems. From forests and farmlands to mountains, oceans, and freshwater sources, these vital systems are under severe threat. We’re losing forests at a rate of 10 million hectares per year, more than two-thirds of ocean ecosystems are damaged, and thousands of species are at risk of extinction. In the face of these challenges, young changemakers across the globe are stepping up to restore ecosystems and reimagine a more sustainable relationship with the planet.

Join Natalia Alekseeva, Coordinator of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (UN Environment Programme UNEP), and Julia Mensa, CEO of Nunatak & UNCCD / G20 Global Land Initiative Youth Ecopreneur, together with youth leaders from Brazil, Ireland and Malta.

This event is organized in collaboration with the Foundation for Environmental Education’s Young Reporters and Learning About Ecosystems and Forests Programs, the Youth Advisory Committee for the Science Panel for the Amazon, and Compass Education.

Let’s celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity together — by learning, connecting, and taking action for the planet we all call home!

Register individually or as a group.

Moderated by young people, this interactive dialogue will focus on two overarching questions:

  • What are the root causes of ecosystem degradation — and what roles can education, technology, and policy play in reversing them?

  • How can young people drive locally led restoration efforts that respect nature, culture, and community needs?

Through live polling, interactive Q&As, and collaborative action brainstorming, participants will actively shape the conversation and identify concrete steps to drive change within their own communities.
