Mission 4.7 at the ASEAN Workshop on Sustainable Development 2023

At SDSN’S ASEAN Workshop on Sustainable Development (AWSD) 2023, held on 21-22 July 2023 at Sunway University, Malaysia, Mission 4.7 hosted a panel discussion entitled “Mission 4.7: Reorienting education to contribute to sustainable development.” The panel featured experts from across ASEAN who shared their experiences and recommended action items to prepare and support policy-makers in wide-scale ESD implementation.

The session featured Karen Chand, Director of Education Studies, SDSN; Dr. Ethel Agnes P. Valenzuela, Education Advisor, Future of Education of ASEAN, ASEAN Secretariat; Dr. Itje Chodidjah, Executive Chair of Indonesian National Commissions for UNESCO, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Indonesia; Dr Noor Hisham Ismail, Head of Educational Planning, Ministry of Education Malaysia; and Asst. Professor Athapol Anunthavorasakul, Director, Center for Educational Research and Development for Sustainable Development, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. It was moderated by Chan Soon Seng, Chief Executive Officer of Teach for Malaysia.

They examined successful educator capacity building programs that can be replicated in the next five years to achieve a pool of educators who are active in disseminating ESD in their profession; and proposed pointers for monitoring and evaluation to determine what success should look like and how to track impact.

A notable outcome of the session was the commitment of the parties represented to partnership with each other in turning policy into action given the current realities of ESD implementation in ASEAN countries.

Hosted by SDSN and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, the 2023 ASEAN Workshop on Sustainable Development focused on charting pathways for sustainable development in Southeast Asia ahead of the 2023 SDG Summit and 2024 Summit for the Future.
