Human Rights Education as a Solution to Support Social Integration and Advance Gender Equality

The Second World Summit on Social Development aims to give “A Call to Action to close the gaps in the implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and give momentum towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.” With five years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), all stakeholders need to step up actions for tangible progress. Now more than ever as the world is currently facing global pushback on human rights, particularly gender equality, as the anti-rights movement is strengthening, we see the value in investing in and promoting human rights education training for gender equality.

This session will address Commitments 4 and 5 of the Copenhagen Declaration in: “Promoting social integration by fostering societies that are…based on the promotion and protection of all human rights, as well as on non-discrimination” and “promoting full respect for human dignity and to achieving equality and equity between women and men.” Additionally, it will address SDG Target 4.7 particularly to: “...ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for …human rights [and] gender equality” among others. Education and learning throughout one’s life cycle to tackle discrimination and protect human rights is essential for societies to thrive and achieve a world of equality, justice and peace.
